Master The 4 Key Types Of SEO To Boost Your Google Rankings

Filed in SEO — May 11, 2024

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a general term for everything you do to improve your websites rankings within search engines. There are four fundamental types of SEO to be aware of, and we’ll teach you what all of them mean in this post!

On-page SEO

As the name suggests, on-page SEO looks at optimizing the various web pages on your site. It centers around the content you create for these pages and the keywords you target. This will help the right people find each page as it should appear in the relevant searches. Content creation is essential for this type of SEO, as you need every page to have content relating to the search intent. In other words, it should provide the user with what they’re searching for.

Common aspects of on-page SEO include:

  • Keyword research
  • Title tags
  • Meta descriptions
  • Header tags
  • URL optimization
  • Image optimization
  • Internal linking

Off-page SEO

Surprise, surprise, off-page SEO relates to things you do outside your site to improve rankings and get more web traffic. This is all about building authority with Google and helping it recognize that your website deserves to be seen.

Link building is the most significant off-page SEO aspect; you generate backlinks from other websites to show that your site is a valuable source of information. Links from sites with a higher domain authority carry more weight and can bump you higher up the rankings.

Other parts of off-page SEO include using social media to drive traffic to your website and implementing a PR strategy to get your site mentioned on different news websites.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO looks at what goes on below the surface. It revolves around making your site easier for search engines to find and understand. This broadly means building a good site architecture or structure with an XML sitemap so Google knows where all of your pages are, how they link together, etc.

Other things to consider are:

  • Fast page loading speeds
  • Having a secure HTTPS connection
  • Not having duplicate content or broken links
  • Developing a mobile-friendly web design
  • Ensuring your pages are indexed

It sounds confusing – and that’s because it is. Most people won’t grasp technical SEO, but that’s okay! It’s why you look to SEO experts to guide you through the process and ensure your website is technically sound.

Local SEO

Lastly, we have local SEO. This strategy targets your website’s visibility in Google’s local search results. For example, when people search for something “near me” or use a town/city in their search, they’ll get local results. The same is true when a user has their location data turned on.

You want your business to appear in these results as it helps you get local traffic – both online and in-person. Local SEO primarily involves setting up a Google Business Profile. This puts you on the map (literally) as you’ll have a business listing in Google Maps. Learn how to optimize this listing, and you’ll appear higher in the Google Maps search results and the regular organic Google search results.
